Maya, Alru & Wesley

Maya, Alru & Wesley

A sunrise shoot in Pretoria with Maya, Alru and Wesley, three Belgian Shepherds and spectacularly talented dog models.

I'm often asked about photographing black dogs and how to do it. It really is easy when you know how, I've put together some tips  to take the mystery out of black dog photography and you can also enjoy some more portraits from this shoot here.

Candice & Loki

Candice & Loki

Loki was adopted from Sandton SPCA and is the love of his Mom's life. I shot some portraits of them together at a local park and whilst Loki wasn't too bothered about being smooched, his Mom loved this portrait so much that it's now hanging on the wall in her home as an A2 framed art piece.

Belinha in London

Belinha in London

This is Belinha a rescue dog from Brazil who I photographed in London.

Belinha is somewhat of a hound about town and regularly features in her Mom's London Dog Blog - The Dog Vine.

Casandra, Nitro & Shay

Casandra, Nitro & Shay

I photographed this trio at Delta Park in Johannesburg for the January edition of Pet Prints Magazine.

Casandra won a competition to get her dogs on the magazine cover and we had lots of fun cajoling the dogs into staying still to have their portraits taken.

Our timing was impeccable as the dark, brooding sky you can see in the back of the shot erupted just as we were finishing our shoot.

Woodrock Shelter Dog Portraits

Woodrock Shelter Dog Portraits

One of many shelter dog portraits I shot at Woodrock last year as part of my drive to promote Mutts the Book.

I set up a black back drop and shot using natural light to get this image. Shelter dogs are quite challenging because they often have no formal training so getting them to stay still long enough to photograph them takes a truck load of patience and as many snacks as possible.

Rosie & Victoria

Rosie & Victoria

Two of my favourite girls. This is a portrait of my daughter Rosie and my favourite brown hound Victoria.

Rosie lives in the UK with her Father and I make a point of photographing her whenever she visits. Her and Victoria have formed quite a friendship so I set up a styled shoot with the help of Pretoria based events company Impressionant Events.

We were fighting with some inclement weather throughout the shoot, but as they say, the show must go on, so we braved the rain and got some beautiful images.

Cape Town Beach Shoot

Cape Town Beach Shoot

Meet York and Ro, two boisterous Bulldogs I photographed on the beach in Cape Town. Living in landlocked Joburg, I jump at the chance to shoot on the beach whenever I go to Cape Town, so this shoot really was a treat.

York and Ro weren't even slightly interested in me, they were fixated on the seaweed, so it was more of a lifestyle shoot than a portrait shoot and I narrowly avoided being taken out by the pair of them when I picked up the seaweed to get their attention.

Daisy at Delta Park

Daisy at Delta Park

March means one thing in Johannesburg, Cosmos.

Daisy's Mom booked several months in advance so we could take advantage of the colourful flowers and shoot at Delta Park with her husband, Daisy and their other dog Dexter.

Cape Town Bulldog Lifestyle Shoot

Cape Town Bulldog Lifestyle Shoot

Anya racing to keep up with York and Ro on the beach in cape Town.

We were spoilt with a beautiful day on the beach and some winter sunshine for this shoot with the iconic Table Mountain in the background.

York and Ro were more concerned with the large chunks of seaweed on the beach than they were with sitting for a portrait, but I did manage to get a few shots of them looking cool, calm and collected.

Delta Park Cosmos Shoot

Delta Park Cosmos Shoot

March means one thing in Johannesburg, Cosmos.

We carefully planned the timing of this shoot so that we could take advantage of the colours of the cosmos and the last of the greenery before winter arrives.

Jeremy Loops Portrait Shoot

Jeremy Loops Portrait Shoot

I was commissioned by Pet Prints Magazine to photograph South African musician Jeremy Loops in Cape Town recently.

Jeremy has a rescue dog called Maya who was in on the action and we had a very cool shoot by the Slangkop Lighthouse near Jeremy's family home.

You'll see Jeremy and Maya on the magazine cover currently and you can view more images from the shoot here.
